STRATFORD – Over the past few years, Stratford EMS (SEMS) has seen about a 10 percent growth in call volume and six percent growth in related patient transports. In order to meet these demands, SEMS has had to beef-up volunteer recruitment and add paid staff to those areas where volunteers are not available.
“Throughout my tenure as Mayor, I have sought to improve the quality of services offered throughout Stratford. One place in particular that has seen positive changes over the last several years is Stratford EMS,” said Mayor John Harkins.
“The volunteers and career staff here at SEMS are and have always been united to serve our community,” said Michael Loiz, Director of EMS. “The Volunteer EMS Association and EMS Funding Committee remain active in supporting the organization’s mission.”
In 2016 alone, SEMS responded to over 7,000 requests for service, and transported 5,021 people in need of emergency medical care. Stratford Emergency Medical Services also supported our community at 25 different events and taught more than 50 CPR/AED courses last year.
SEMS has been recognized many times both locally and nationally over the past few years, including:
- 2016 AHA Mission Lifeline Bronze Level Recognition
- 2016 Parent Heart Watch National Hero Award
- EMS crews have been recognized and awarded by Sponsor Hospital Council of Greater Bridgeport (SHCGB) for outstanding work on numerous calls.
SEMS has worked hard to enhance its historical commitment to high-quality, community- oriented responses. The organization has re-started its EMT Training program, and continues to enhance their capabilities and expertise, while working hard to ensure that residents’ emergency medical needs come first.
“This year is already proving to be another busy year with over 640 calls in January alone – which is a record for calls handled in one month for SEMS, according to our EMS leadership,” said Mayor Harkins. “We should all be thankful that SEMS staff continues to be committed to the residents and the community they serve.”
